Rajaji National Park, India

(Naja naja)

IUCN status : Near Threatened

Specatcled Cobra earns it’s name from the beautifully embroidered scales at the rear of it’s hood. A full grown cobra measures from 1.5 to 2 m in length. The hatchlings of cobra are born with fully functional venomous glands and are independent since birth. A full grown cobra can yield 169 – 250 mg of venom per bite which contains highly strong neurotoxin and cardiatoxin. Spectacled Cobras have bifurcated tongue which helps them to collect odour from the air and pass the information to Jacobson’s organ located inside the oral cavity. This helps the snake to determine on which of the two directions it must move to get a prey easily.
